I've been car free since 2012. I originally sold my car because I calculated the annual cost of car ownership and was horrified. I still have a traditional bike, but I notice that people who would never ride a bike are now riding ebikes to commute or for errands. Hopefully this leads more cities to build protected mobility lanes to accomodate micromobility devices.
I once had a car that developed flat spots in the tyres, dead battery and rusted out exhaust pipes due to lack of use (I was cycling to work and recreationally). Cars demand use. They are liabilities not assets. They can be ineffective and expensive because they are supported by a road system that permits lethal sanctions on people who use the competition. The original (literal) killer app with a self sustaining entrapment angle supported by marketing to make the jail feel like desire.
I do agree with your points in general, but I think there is some fallacy in averages. Inevitably, there will be those who will say their costs are much lower - e.g. "I do not have a car payment"
Got an ebike a couple months ago. Was already putting more miles on my analog than I drove, but that’s truly been the most life changing purchase I’ve ever made. Getting tougher to keep the car around 😅
Agree, people don’t realize how much money is wasted on car ownership.
A major reason I moved to NYC is reading Mr Money Mustache’s ‘the high cost of commuting’ and then I ran some math on the time / money costs of driving to work. Easy choice!

It is now, actually.
